If it where only for CPU load reasons you would want to consider all other engineering elements (there is a thing out there called SMP or MP!). Are we saying that using the CPU 90% of available cpu cycles to manage a communication device is OK, and that applying more CPU power is the answer? I really have to question the scalability of any protocol (network or otherwise) that requires the CPU manage 40-80K packets/second.
