The Maui High Performance Computing Center: A Reply to Randy Katz
Abstract:
I'll attempt a defense of the Maui High Performance Computing Center, in response to Randy Katz's claim that it is nothing more than a boondoggle. While the establishment of this center is rife with politics (as is virtually always the case with large investments by Congress), and the timing is bad, there are scientific, technical, and economic justifications for building a large supercomputer center in a tropical resort in the middle of the Pacific ocean. And early decisions by the PIs and others involved in the Center have served to enhance its chance for success.
