Application-transparent operation-based update propagation in a Mobile File System
Abstract:
Seven months ago, before I left the Coda group and returned to Hong Kong, I defined the framework of my thesis project: Operation-based Update Propagation in a Mobile File System. In this talk I would like to report on some of my interim results in this venture. Specifically, I was focusing on the "application-transparent" part of my plan, where applications need no modifications to take advantage of the new update-propagation mechanism. I have implemented the proposed mechanism and have carried out some experimental evaluations. The initial experimental results are very encouraging: By using operation shipping, the network traffics were substantially reduced (by 8.7 to 162 times) and the update propagation were significantly speeded up (by 4.1 times to 62.62 times on a 9.6-kbps network, and by 1.25 to 18.83 times on a 64-kbps network). I will present these experimental results, as well I will discuss the detail design of my research prototype. There may be a demo after my talk if time permits.
